Malta Development President Association President Michael Stivala said that part of a neighbouring Sliema property, located next to his company’s development site, was constructed illegally.

Stivala, whose ST Group is constructing a four-star hotel at The Strand spoke out after the neighbours warned the development is impacting their property. Joe Farrugia told the Times that the construction works left a gaping hole in his residence wall.

“These questions come as a surprise since ST Group had a number of meetings with the owners of the property you mention after they built part of their building illegally, encroaching on our property,” Stivala said.

“We held various meeting with the architect representing them. In the said meetings, both the architect and contractor of the adjacent property admitted they were at fault.”

“We refute that any damage was inflicted by our works that started after the other property was completed.”

Meanwhile, the OHSA is investigating footage published by Lovin Malta which shows workers at the site without protective equipment and has issued a stop order pending the investigation.

“Regarding the management of the construction site at Triq Ix-Xatt, we take safety very seriously, and all work is carried out in compliance with local regulations.  Feel free to check with the authorities that inspect the site regularly,” Stivala said.

“As a member of the MDA, I fully understand the importance of setting an example in terms of safety and best practices.”

“We continuously work to ensure that our projects uphold these standards, and I am always open to feedback that helps us improve. I believe it’s crucial to maintain open communication with the relevant bodies to ensure our sites meet the required safety norms.”
