Melvin Theuma, the ‘middleman’ now believed to be working with the police in the investigation into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, was a ‘close friend’ of Yorgen Fenech.

“Melvin Theuma operated a white taxi outside of the Hilton Hotel, and he was close friends with Mr Fenech,” a white taxi operator who spoke on condition of anonymity told Lovin Malta.

“He owned one of the ten taxis operating in that area.”

Melvin Theuma is believed to have been arrested in connection to a money-laundering ring after an operation by the Maltese police and Interpol successfully arrested a number of people.

He then requested a presidential pardon in return to his cooperation with providing evidence that would lead to a conviction in the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder case, which Prime Minister Joseph Muscat agreed to on condition that it stands up in court.

Further to this, the taxi driver said that Theuma himself has not been operating the taxi himself, but employed someone else to operate it for him for the last two years.

“Melvin has two taxis, but he’s had another employee working his taxies over the last two years,” the driver continued. “His taxi number is TAXI237.”

A second person further corroborated the story, further saying that Theuma acted as the personal driver to Fenech: “Theuma is a white taxi operator with exclusive operating rights with the Hilton Hotel in Portomaso. He also sometimes acts as a personal driver to Yorgen Fenech.”

The source went on to say that Theuma was fearing for his life as he was afraid that he might end up in prison.

A third source added that Theuma would act as a “fixer for anything” that Yorgen requested of him.

Yorgen Fenech, the CEO of Tumas Group that operates the Hilton Hotel, was arrested early this morning after he was caught attempting to flee the country on his private yacht.

Lovin Malta has reached out to the Hilton Malta for their reaction to this story.
