Minister And Police Commissioner Must Explain Inaction On Maltese Suspects Under European Arrest Warrants, PN Says
Malta’s Home Affairs Minister and Police Commissioner must provide an explanation over the enforcement of European Arrest Warrants following revelations of two cases where suspects were able to evade capture, the PN has said.
This comes after the arrest of Iosif Galea in Italy while holidaying with former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his wife, Michelle, as revealed by the Times of Malta. Galea is wanted in connection to an investigation into trading in influence and leaking sensitive data at the Malta Gaming Authority.
He is expected to face charges in both Germany and Malta.
Galea had been subject to a European Arrest Warrant since last year, but has travelled in an out of Malta during that period.
Meanwhile, Ryan Schembri, the owner of the defunct More Supermarkets, was recently extradited to Malta to face charges linked to money laundering following years of being on the run.
However, it was recently revealed that police had been aware of his whereabouts well before his capture.
In a statement, PN spokesperson Joe Giglio said that the recent cases showed that people under EAWs can enter and leave Malta unhindered and is a significant security threat, demanding an explanation from Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa.
