Miscarriage Leave Should Extend To Partners, ADPD Says

Third-party ADPD has called for miscarriage leave to also cover partners, so they can support the woman through the recovery process.

Welcoming the government’s public consultation on miscarriage leave, the party’s Chairperson Sandra Gauci put forward additional proposals of her own.

“When a woman experiences a miscarriage, it is a trauma that is both physical and psychological. A woman should be given the chance to recover not just her physical health but her wellbeing too,” Gauci said.

In light of this, the government should assure that women and people who experience miscarriages have “access to the psychological support needed to cope with the loss”.

Meanwhile, care should extend to the partner, she continued.

“There may be situations where it would be beneficial for the partner to also be granted leave so that they can support the woman during this time of loss and both physical and emotional pain.”

The state launched a public consultation to discuss the introduction of miscarriage leave yesterday.

The discussions are being coordinated by Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul who brought together people from different sectors of society yesterday afternoon.

Members of the medical community, psychologists, trade unions, employers associations and people who experienced a miscarriage all convened and spoke candidly about it.
