Miżieb Deal Was Never ‘Hidden’, FKNK Reacts After Court Decision To Null Agreement
Malta’s main hunting lobby has reacted to a court decision that annulled a key agreement between the Lands Authority and FKNK signed in October 2020.
Saying that FKNK was not a part of the court case per se, the group said the deal had never been signed in secrecy.
“Contrary to what is being said in some parts of the media, there was never any hiding of this agreement, so much so that the agreement was published immediately and is still accessible online till today,” it said.
“This is also contrary to similar deals made between the government and BirdLife Malta and other NGOs which it seems were never published.”
The court case saw Magistrate Lawrence Mintoff concluding that the “agreement signed between the Lands Authority and the FKNK on 9th October 2020 is null, as it was not done according to the law”.
Back in October 2020, Malta’s government signed an agreement to grant access to the green areas of Aħrax and Miżieb to Malta’s hunting lobby the FKNK.
A major criticism of the agreement from NGOs was that it was signed in complete secrecy, without the presence of the press.
The agreements were signed by the then-Transport Minister Ian Borg, Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia, Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, and Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and Construction Chris Agius.
BirdLife Malta, Moviment Graffiti, Din L-Art Ħelwa, Friends of the Earth Malta, and Prof. Edward Mallia took the Lands Authority to court over the handover agreement.
