‘Moldova Is Europe, Europe Is Moldova’: Roberta Metsola Addresses Thousands In Chișinău Ahead Of EU Summit
“Moldova is Europe, Europe Is Moldova”. – these were the opening words of European Parliament President Roberta Metsola today as she addressed a 70,000-strong crowd in the capital Chișinău, ahead of more talks for the country’s EU accession.
Moldova has held a staunchly pro-Western and pro-Ukrainian attitude amid Russia’s war. Moldova’s President Maia Sandu has openly accused the Kremlin of trying to destabilize the country of 2.6 million people for months, by deploying hybrid warfare and slashing its gas supplies.
“Thank you for believing Moldova! Hold steady, keep strong. The world can hear the heart of Europe beating on the streets of Chișinău. Moldova will make Europe stronger, safer and more free. We will be with you all the way. Together there is nothing that we cannot face,” Metsola said, addressing the massive crowds.
Brussels granted the country EU candidacy last June. Metsola’s official visit and rallying words come just as Maldova is set to host the second edition of the European Political Community in June, where 47 European heads of state, governments and EU institutions will meet.
