Momentum Calls For Forced Referendum On Magisterial Inquiry Reform

Now that the citizens’ rights have been curtailed through the vote in the second reading of the magisterial inquiry reform in parliament, it is time to start organising ourselves for an abrogative referendum, new third-party Momentum said earlier today.

Abrogative referendums are held when citizens force a vote on a piece of new law passed by the legislature, usually by collecting a certain number of signatures in support of a vote.

“We are full square behind the proposal originally put forward by ADPD to collect signatures for a referendum to abrogate the repressive clauses in the law, once it is finally approved in third reading,” Momentum General Secretary, Mark Camilleri Gambin.

Gambin stated that the process of the collection of signatures of 10% of the population is a “long one”. Representatives from NGOs like Graffitti, Repubblika, Birdlife, Friends of the Earth,  Aditus and Occupy Justice as well as political parties, ranging from Momentum to PN, ADPD to Volt, should get together to form a referendum committee, he continued

“Referenda questions require surgical precision and it is thus important that the committee helps identify and formulate the best question that addresses the concerns of all Maltese citizens. The battle on this vital issue has been temporarily lost, but the people’s will shall ultimately prevail”, Camilleri Gambin concluded.

Do you think it’s time for an abrogative referendum on this proposal?
