Monthly Cleanups: Mellieħa Local Council Attempts To Tackle Garbage
Protecting trees is not the only contemporary environmental issue in Malta. The cleanliness issue that afflicts the country is also constantly in the spotlight.
The Mellieħa Local Council is organising regular cleanups and began this week with a clean up in ‘Aħrax tat-Tunnara’ that saw junk being gathered and removed from the popular camping site.
The councillor responsible for the environment, Rebecca Bartolo Cutajar, posted on Facebook said: “Three weeks ago I started taking note of different areas in our locality in order to organise monthly community cleanups. L-Aħrax tat-Tunnara was first in the list.”
A Clean-Up every month
Contacted by Lovin Malta, Bartolo Cutajar said: “In the 2nd local council meeting, I proposed that I shall be organising monthly clean-ups.” She was happy to say that her proposal was met by support from both major political parties.
“I identify the areas by listening to the suggestions of our residents and then going around these areas myself to confirm the next clean up area according to which I find worst.”
The councillor explained that the council is then informed and an agreement is made before the event is promoted.

The minority leader of the Nationalist Party Councillor Ivan Castillo said: “Keeping and maintaining the cleanliness of the environment was a priority in our electoral programme.” He went on to say that environmental prioritisation “was a must”, and added that “as soon as it was proposed, there was no hesitation and we immediately agreed.”
Last month, the Mayor of Mellieħa even took it upon himself to tackle the issue of litter in the locality.
