New figures have shown that more females than males graduated from tertiary-level education in Malta in 2021.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) recently revealed that there was a total number of 5597 graduates in Malta, equal to an increase of 20.9 percent from 2020.

59.7 percent of these tertiary graduates were female. The number of female graduates exceeded their male counterparts in all levels of tertiary education.

Whilst in 2020 only 2582 female students graduated there was an increase of 29.4 percent with 3341 graduating in 2021.

In contrast, there was only a 10.2 percent increase recorded from 2020 to 2021 in male student graduates.

It seems that women continue to outnumber men in completing their tertiary education worldwide, although how this will impact the gender differences in the employment and pay sectors remains to be seen.
