More than half of all work-related deaths take place in the construction industry, the latest NSO figures have revealed.

Between 2014 and 2018, 11 people have died while on construction sites. This figure does not take into account the three people who have died in 2019.

Worryingly, while the number of work-related deaths has dropped in other sectors, it has actually grown in the construction industry.

The total number of work-related accidents between 2014 and 2018 stands at 21. All fatalities at work that took place in the past five years were men, mostly between the age of 25 and 34.

More than half of the victims were Maltese, while the majority of deaths were due to head injuries.

The majority of fatal accidents at work were recorded in the Northern Harbour District followed by the Southern Harbour district, both major areas of construction.
