Mosta Shop Floods As Owners Blame New Controversial Roadworks Outside

Two shop-owners in Mosta who have been dealing with near non-stop roadworks right outside their store for years are at the end of their tether after finding their store’s basement floor completely flooded by rainwater today.

“After two years of roadworks in Triq il-Kbira, Mosta, it’s become worse than it ever was. We never had this problem… as long as we are paying taxes though, right?” one of the owners of Glo Up said as they shared footage of water entering their establishment.

In the footage, the owners head down wet stairs to find their basement full of water. Exposed electric plugs and stock items can be seen drenched in water, before the video shows a burst pipe spraying large amounts of water everywhere.

Speaking to Lovin Malta, the owners said other establishments on the road had also been flooded, and though authorities had showed up when they first called, they weren’t able to help very much.

“During the first flood this morning they did come to help, but they said it was challenging, and that they’d need to break the pavement and use a pump to remove the water. It’s ankle deep now,” she said.

“They told me they wouldn’t be able to help further unless it is a life or death situation or a serious situation. Right now, there’s my partner, his mom and his brother just working to remove the water.”

She commented on how panicked the shop’s team was after the failsafe salva vita switched – but they were still told this wasn’t a life or death situation.

“What happens if one of us gets a shock from these plugs?” she asked

She believed the roadworks had exacerbated the floodwater situation, leading to their store, and others, suffering serious flooding.

“We suffered a lot of damage today. I appeal to authorities to fix the problems and to settle the damages we suffered,” she ended.

Lovin Malta has received various complaints about the road, both from residents in the area, as well as business owners who have faced various struggles with their establishments – but this is the first incident where the infrastructure was seen to be possibly inferior to the previous situation.

Triq il-Kbira, one of the principal roads where people can enter Mosta, was closed for the first time back in November 2020, having been opened again in December.

Then, it was closed entirely in March 2021, and it has not been opened for traffic again since. This has caused a major inconvenience, both for residents and for anyone commuting in the centre of Malta. The works were set to be completed this summer.

And when it comes to flooding, the island has seen some horrific scenes this week – one courier was even filmed pushing through waist-high water in Mrieħel to deliver a meal during a sudden downpour.
