The Maltese woman who was allegedly raped by a carer from Mount Carmel Hospital back in April has opened up about her harrowing experience, three months from the day it happened.

Emma Attard has been sharing depictions of her experience through her art, with multiple illustrations related to the occurrence uploaded on her Instagram account @personifikazzjoni.

“This is my bed in which I was raped in by a carer from Mount Carmel Hospital,” Attard said in a social media post today.

Attard decided to take the matter to Facebook because three months on, nothing has been done with regard to justice being brought to the victim, and the rapist has not even been charged.

“It’s been three months and six days since the rape and nothing had been done by the court. This monster came into my haven, abused my vulnerability and took away my safety, trust, and hope and left me feeling betrayed, lost, shaken, cold and loveless,” Attard said.

“It’s been a very long and hard journey of recovery, healing and relearning love but I’m much stronger and ready for the fight and justice,” she said.

Lovin Malta spoke with Attard directly, to hear more about her experience and the way it all unfolded.

She first met the man, who is a Maltese national, when she was a patient at Mount Carmel and he continued speaking to her after she was discharged.

“He sent me a friend request and continued checking up on me. He asked me for my address and the first time I said no. He replied by saying that this was his job, that it appears that I don’t want his help and that he helps people,” Attard told Lovin Malta.

“He made me feel very, very guilty for not accepting the help. The day after he asked me again for the address and I gave it to him.”

Attard is due to get married in a few months, but she feels as if she cannot escape this experience while knowing that the rapist is still running free.

He has since been suspended from his position at Mount Carmel and a magisterial inquiry has been opened, however, three months later, Attard has yet to see any signs of progress.

Lovin Malta has asked the police for an update on this investigation and whether the rapist will be charged.

“I want to focus on my wedding in a few months, I want to close the chapter and leave this behind me but justice in Malta is very very slow,” Attard said.

“Anxiety kills me inside with questions, doubt and stigma but we need victims to speak up, to feel heard and get the help they need.”

“I’m a survivor, I got my art and I will be okay but justice, man…how can I move forward? How can we encourage victims to speak up with all the stigma and lack of awareness?”

“Malta, all I ask is for justice to be served. This monster is still out there… Mount Carmel Hospital’s patients deserve help and ONLY help. It’s already hard as it is to be admitted to a mental hospital…”

“Two stigmas need to be broken.”

On her Instagram account, Attard continues to document her journey into recovery, through a series of illustrations that vent out the different feelings that arise with such an experience.
