MP Edward Zammit Lewis Urges Malta To Follow Singapore And Reclaim More Land

Labour MP Edward Zammit Lewis has urged Malta to follow Singapore’s lead and develop major land reclamation projects.

Although Zammit Lewis didn’t provide specific examples of what he has in mind, he said that certain projects should be relocated to reclaimed land so as to cause the least inconvenience to the public.

He said that while the private sector should be involved, the projects shouldn’t be purely speculative and that they should be developed with a “certain momentum, unlike the concessions by previous PN administrations that have yet to be implemented.”

“This project should target important strategic aims, including the relocation of certain activities to make them less inconvenient and dangerous to the people of Malta,” he said.

“We must think about more open spaces, green projects and sporting projects. We must think about schemes within the residential component of the projects to help young couples acquire their first property. We must protect our environment as much as possible, as well as our cultural heritage.”

Asked to provide examples of projects that could be relocated to reclaimed land, Zammit Lewis said there are several possibilities.

“There is no doubt that a study should be conducted on each and every one of them,” he said.

“Nevertheless, this should not stop the current Administration from, in our aspiration to be like successful countries such as Singapore in terms of planning and organisation of our country, launching land reclamation projects, without further delay.”

“Moreover, land reclamation is the only way for us to continue growing economically and to maintain the current economic well-being for the entire population, as has happened over the past eleven years, while at the same time safeguarding our environment and not to touch further the existing Outside Development Zones.”
