Munxar vs Sannat: Mayor Says Injured BBQers Broke The Law, Accuses Neighbouring Town Of Lies And Intimidation

Munxar’s mayor has clapped back at a video which surfaced online showing the moment two people in neighbouring Sannat were injured after being hit by fireworks originating in his town… and he’s pointed at what sounds like a deep-seated rivalry between the two small Gozitan towns.

“Whoever knows me knows that I’m a very cautious person and I believe that any disagreements can be solved with discussion and compromises, not pettiness,” Damien Spiteri wrote on Facebook this afternoon.

“But in the face of certain deception, it would be remiss if I didn’t clarify certain things.”

What followed was a six-point status highlighting a number of “illegalities”, “lies” and “provocations” which Spiteri said originated from the neighbouring town. Among them, the mayor alleged there was a group of people who trespassed into the fields where the fireworks were being set off, supposedly “offending and intimidating” the factory workers as they were setting off the colourful display.

But that’s not all – Spiteri even said the floodlights of the Sannat football ground were turned on “a couple of minutes after the fireworks started to ruin the visual spectacle”.  This, the young mayor continued, was done “in an abusive way because the access was closed due to security”.

As for the Sannat BBQ which saw two people being injured and hospitalised due to the rogue fireworks, Spiteri said the entire activity was organised against the law, metres away from where the fireworks were set off… and on purpose, too. “This illegal activity was an attempt to stop us from setting the fireworks, something which was completely covered legally,” Spiteri continued.

Concluding by saying licensed people were on the scene early this morning in Sannat’s schools and football ground to clean up and inspect the area for any potential hazards, Spiteri said he will “not let any intimidation break” Munxar’s community. “Wherever there’s unity, there’s strength, and unity won over division.”

What do you make of Spiteri’s reaction and the ongoing saga between Munxar and Sannat?
