An African mother who tragically lost her son to health complications while living in Malta has appealed for funds to repatriate his body back to his home country.

Baba Camara, aged 32 from Gambia, was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital after experiencing back pain. Unfortunately, what he was suffering from was much more serious than anticipated.

“My beloved son Baba tragically left me. His back pain had resulted in an unexpected death,” his mother Adama Manneh, wrote on the fundraising page.

His mother immediately flew down from Africa to Malta as soon as she heard the news, but little did she know that it would be the last time she’d see him. Now, she needs help to repatriate his body back to Gambia.

“Two weeks before 9th January, Baba’s friends kept calling him whilst he was in the hospital and Baba spoke normally to them, and even though he was not okay, he kept telling them that he was. He was a very smiley person,” she said.

At some point, Baba stopped answering, and when his colleagues noticed that he had stopped responding, they immediately knew that something was up.

“So on 9th January Baba received various calls from friends, that he was unable to answer due to him being very unwell. So instead I answered the phone and I Informed them that his state just was getting worse and worse.”

“Later on that evening, my worst nightmare had turned into a reality,” she said.

“I had traveled all the way from Africa as soon as I found out that he was in the hospital and knew that his situation was getting worse, little did I know that they were his last few days on this earth.”

“After he passed away I was left all alone, broken, hopeless, and mournful and I had no money to take his body back to Africa.”

“I’ve now organised a fundraiser with the goal of €6,000 to raise funds to transport his corpse back home to Gambia. I urge you to kindly make a donation so that Baba could rest easy in his country close to all his family and friends. 100% of the money raised will go to take my baby back home.”

So far, €1,301 have been raised out of the €6,000 goal – the fundraiser can be accessed through this link.

Lovin Malta also spoke to one of his colleagues, with Baba having been working at a local restaurant.

“He was working with us, he was a really nice guy, always smiling, always happy, even when he was in the hospital, he didn’t even know he was so unwell.”
