Following concerns raised yesterday on three gaping holes in the road leading to Nadur, Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana has pledged to fix the road at “the earliest possible” convenience.

Shocking footage emerged yesterday of potholes on the road which, upon further inspection, revealed that there was no underlying support beneath the tarmac.

The three holes, which have been likened to sinkholes, could have had serious consequences for vehicles driving past, especially if the road were to collapse.

The concerns it raised online promoted local authorities to very quickly close off the road, with Caruana pledging that works to repair it would commence “at the earliest possible”.

Nadur Mayor Edward Said also took to Facebook to express his thoughts on the matter, noting how “as a local council we’ve reported the issue several times” and that central government was responsible for fixing it.

Minister Caruana addressed some underlying issues that led to the problem in the first place, most notably that “the condition of roads in Gozo is the consequence of years and years of neglect”.

“That is why with Pro?ett G?awdex we are doing a number of road works concurrently to address this issue,” Caruana continued.

Since then, sections of the road has been closed off and the rest rendered safe for vehicles.

“The Ministry for Gozo took the necessary action immediately,” Said replied. “We already obtained approvals to do emergency works through a direct order. However, as I stated several times, the big challenge that we have in Gozo is the shortage of contractors to do the road works.”

The road isn’t the only one in danger of collapsing according to Edward Said, who said that there are many others in Nadur just like it.
