Nationalist MP Hermann Schiavone has insisted leaked SMSes to Nickie Vella de Fremeaux saying her husband, Opposition leader Adrian Delia, “is like a piece of shit” after a few drinks have been taken out of context.

Blogger Manuel Delia today published part of a SMS conversation on 20th March between Vella de Fremeaux and Schiavone, who is one of Delia’s staunchest allies in the PN parliamentary group.

“He had a few drinks as well today. I tried to stop him. I think that he is drinking to forget the problem,” Schiavone says. “Nickie… Adrian is like a piece of shit today. This cannot go on. If need be, he will quit, but I want to make sure he will do it in a dignified way.”

Smses

Manuel Delia published the SMSes, which he confirmed were sent last March, after Schiavone branded a report by MaltaToday which referred to those text messages as “deceiving”.

Contacted by Lovin Malta, Schiavone said the newspaper’s report gave the impression that he sent the SMSes recently, and not eight months ago “when the context was very different”.

However, he refused to explain what he meant by this statement.

“I’m very forthcoming, but it’s not fair to divulge things that are said in private and I won’t say what the context was out of respect,” he said. “I take responsibility for my private messages to Nickie and it’s sad that some are trying to take advantage of a vulnerable person to score political points and damage the PN leader.”

Schiavone insisted he remains fully supportive of Delia, describing him as “the biggest asset of the party” and warning the PN will be “doomed” were he to resign.

The SMSes were leaked a few days after it was confirmed that Vella de Fremeaux had requested a marital separation from her husband, with whom she has five children.
