NBC Chairman Mark Camilleri: ‘In An Age Of Distraction, The Love Of Reading Should Still Be Central’

Living in a modern world filled to the brim with notifications and vibrating screens, the Chairman of the National Book Council has sent a reminder on why it remains as important as ever to keep reading books.
“In an age of technology and a million distractions, the love of reading should still be central – the more you read, the better the knowledge you get,” Mark Camilleri told Lovin Malta in a new interview.
To mark World Book and Copyright Day – and ahead of the major National Book Festival happening this October at the MFCC – Camilleri broke down the key reasons reading is a major benefit to anybody.

“I can’t imagine that all my knowledge gained in my 45 years in life, would have been gathered without books,” Camilleri stoically says. “If you don’t read books, it’s like being in an empty room, your soul is kind of empty…”
Aside from the wealth of knowledge one can gain, it also helps to help one regain a sense of self and calmness in this chaotic world: “They are a huge distraction from the hustle and bustle of life.”
The National Book Festival will run for five days between 18th and 22nd October at the MFCC.
Expect the biggest celebration of reading on the island, with the island’s top publishers set to show their latest and greatest pieces of work.
You can also enjoy cross medium crossovers with everything from theatre to illustration, as well as interviews and masterclasses – and stay tuned to the National Book Council’s social media for a big surprise ahead of the big event.
