Netflix is set to film a number of TV shows in Malta, with an initial deal to be signed in the near future.

Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi announced last night that talks are underway with the global media giant to film shows in Malta, but that this is dependent on the island setting up its own soundstage.

“Producers have told us that while we have great outdoor facilities, the production of TV series requires soundstages, which is something we’re working on,” he said on Dissett. “If we get them, Netflix will be willing to film a number of TV shows in Malta.”

He confirmed that the government will invest just under €2 million to build a soundstage of 5000m² at the Ricasoli film studios and that three private operators have also shown interest in setting up their own soundstages.

Mizzi also used the occasion to announce that the rebate for film productions in Malta will be increased dramatically from the current 27% to a maximum of 40%.

“The likes of Australia, Canada and other European counties have improved their film incentives in recent years and have rendered themselves more competitive,” he said. “A 40% film rebate will make us competitive with European and American markets.”
