Former OPM official Neville Gafà said that the Data Protection Commissioner has ordered him to delete articles he had posted about a high-ranking Central Bank official placing flowers for Daphne Caruana Galizia at the Great Siege Monument.

“I didn’t film him myself but I received the footage from several people who were passing by, including government workers, high-ranking government officials and Central Bank workers,” Gafà said.

“I didn’t think I was breaching his rights, since he carried out his actions publicly in the middle of Republic Street. However, the Data Commissioner told me that action would be taken against me unless I delete the articles so I will bow my head and comply.”

Gafà went on to question whether footage that was recently taken of him removing flowers from the monument and published on the Times of Malta also breached his rights.

“To be clear, I didn’t mind that it was published; in fact I told the Times that if they were so interested in my actions, I could have sent them footage myself because I wasn’t not embarrassed by what I did. But will it be investigated?”

He said he suspects a “hidden hand” was behind both the Data Commissioner report and a phone call he received from the police about clearing the monument.

“This is what I’m going through right after resigning from the OPM,” he said. “My message to the hidden hand I believe is behind these actions is this: be careful. I’ll find out who you are. I’m acting openly, while you’re hiding in the shadows to harm me.”
