A new initiative aimed at stimulating the minds of residents in elderly homes is being rolled out in Malta.

Games like chess, backgammon, sudoku as well as tournaments and other activities are set to be introduced after St Vincent de Paul and NGO Malta Mind Sports Association agreed to promote these types of games.

Organisers say they can strengthen the level of one’s IQ and can help support better thinking.

The games will also give residents more time and opportunity to socialise with each other, as well as compete with each other in a fun and social atmosphere – especially in light of two years of pandemic regulations, where many elderly were left isolated for long periods of time.

“We are committed to helping strengthen the mental health of our elderly in various ways – among them mind games,” Active Ageing Minister Jo Etienne Abela said.

“It is our duty to help the elderly push back against dementia as scientifically we see that these types of games can help quite a bit.”

The games will be organised in two hour sessions every two weeks where residents can learn how to play as well as actually practice and play the games. Two facilitators from the MMSA will be on site to assist and introduce the idea, while the games will be provided by St Vincent de Paul.

What else can be done to improve quality of life for the elderly?
