New PL Youth President Calls For Discussion On Rise Of ‘Unconventional’ Politicians
The new President of the Labour Party’s youth wing said that Donald Trump’s election as US President should spark a discussion about why people around the world are increasingly supporting “unconventional” politicians.
When Trump was re-elected last November, Miguel Abela said his resilience – despite losing the previous election, being censored on social media, and narrowly surviving an assassination attempt – should inspire people to never give up.
“We may not agree on everything he says or does but for me a person who gave up everything, and quite frankly a perfect life, to give service to others is an inspiration,” Abela said back then.
“You are an inspiration Donald Trump.”
Seven months into Trump’s second term, Abela told Lovin Malta that while he disagrees with many of his policies, he acknowledges the way he had convinced people to elect him against all odds.
“As someone with a broad interest in international affairs, particularly U.S. politics, I remember acknowledging Donald Trump’s resilience in winning the presidential election, quite literally, against all odds,” he said.
“Although I personally disagree with many of Trump’s policies, especially those lacking a foundation in social justice, I recognised a politician who successfully convinced the American public to elect him to one of the most influential offices in the world.”
“He did so with an even stronger showing than in his 2016 victory, despite facing intense opposition from major political and social forces.”
“I believe it’s important to examine and openly discuss why people around the world are increasingly supporting so-called unconventional politicians in democratic elections. Avoiding these conversations for the sake of avoiding controversy will only deepen political tensions over time.”
