New PN Proposals Target Malta’s Waste Issues

The Nationalist Party has presented Innaddfu lil Malta, a consultation document outlining proposals for improving waste management and public cleanliness.
Introduced by Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Public Cleanliness Eve Borg Bonello and Liam Sciberras, President of the PN’s College of Local Councillors, the plan is based on consultations with local councils, NGOs, commercial operators, and other stakeholders.
Immediate measures include underground bin systems designed to reduce odours and pests, and partitioned collection vehicles for more efficient waste runs. Medium-term goals involve electrifying waste collection fleets, deploying smart bins nationwide, and using recycled water for street cleaning.
The document also calls for stronger enforcement, enabling local councils to issue fines for non-compliance, and targeted measures such as graffiti removal and marine debris collection.
A central carrying-capacity study, informed by smart infrastructure, would guide long-term planning.
