Jeremie Camilleri’s sentence for the murder of Pelin Kaya has been confirmed… and it’s 40 years.

Four weeks ago, the 34-year-old Camilleri pleaded guilty to the voluntary killing of Pelin, who was run over mere hours into her 30th birthday in a murder which shocked the nation in the early hours of 18th January 2023.

One week later, the prosecution and the defence agreed on a 37-year prison sentence which would have seen Camilleri being let out when he’s 70 years old. However, judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera – who was set to announce her sentence this morning – was not bound by law to respect this agreement, and in fact opted for a harsher sentence.

This morning, Camilleri was sentenced to 40 years in prison, and was also ordered to pay a fine of €20,000.

13 other charges were lodged against Camilleri, including the threatening of people who rushed to Pelin’s aid, driving under the influence of both cocaine and cannabis, and breaking his probation. During the compilation of evidence, court experts also testified that Camilleri did not apply the breaks when running Kaya over. Police even had to use a taser to subdue him just before his arrest in the middle of the road during a tense altercation.
What do you make of this morning’s sentence?
