An explosion has been reported at the Soċjeta Piroteknika 15 ta’ Awwissu fireworks factory in Dwejra, police have confirmed.

Eyewitnesses have warned that flames are spreading rapidly in the surrounding fields, while someone described the sound of the explosion as “a really loud aeroplane taking off”.

Firefighters, police officers and ambulances are on site. It is currently unclear whether any people were inside the building at the time of the explosion.

More explosions could be heard after the initial explosion.
