The Accident and Emergency Department at the Mater Dei hospital had to be partially evacuated following a gas leak earlier today.

“The Accident and Emergency Department is currently operating at a reduced level due to a technical alert that required the evacuation of part of the department,” the hospital’s chief executive Ivan Falzon confirmed with Lovin Malta. “Our technical teams identified an issue with one of our drainage outflows and are currently addressing it.”

He said the situation is under control and staff and patients are currently being escorted back into the department, but patients should expect some delays over the next few hours.
