Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has announced his resignation, Politico has reported.
His actions come ahead of a confidence vote which was expected to take place next week, called for by Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.
This paves the way for Salvini’s desired early election, but will not automatically trigger it. The way forward is to be determined by President Sergio Mattarella.
Tensions between Malta and Salvini have been high the past few months, with him accusing Malta of failing to relocate its share of asylum seekers. Just last week, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech described seeing Salvini brandishing Rosary beads as ‘hurtful’.
