Gozo's iconic Azure Window collapsed earlier this morning.

The natural rock formation, which had been on the verge of collapse for months, had increasingly harsher warnings against hikers climbing up it.

The news was met with disbelief at first, until Prime Minister Joseph Muscat tweeted his sadness.

The iconic landmark was featured in many huge international productions, most famously in HBO's Game Of Thrones, where it served as the backdrop for the wedding between Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen.

But the landmark was also loved by tourists and locals, who considered it one of the most beautiful sites on the island.

Internationally, the Azure Window was also the focal point for many campaigns, from travel ads, to Hugo Boss shoots.
