Malta Will Observe A National Day Of Mourning For Daphne Caruana Galizia
Malta will observe a national day of mourning for Daphne Caruana Galizia on Friday, the day of the journalist’s funeral.
The government said in a statement that all flags on public buildings will be lowered to half-mast on the day.
“We are doing this as a sign that no attack on freedom of expression is acceptable in our democracy,” it said. “This will be a show of respect from a nation united. We urge everyone to respect this national day of mourning, because it is moments like these which define the strength of our democracy.”
Barring urgent cases, the law courts will also close at noon on Friday to allow members of the judiciary and lawyers to attend the funeral. The flag on the law courts will be raised at half mast and a black sash will be stuck on the main door.
The funeral will take place at the Mosta parish church and will be presided over by Archbishop Charles Scicluna. Daphne Caruana Galizia’s family has urged the media not to broadcast the event.
