A man who was recently arrested by seven police officers at a Gżira lido is wanted in Serbia for possessing or manufacturing illegal explosives and firearms and allegedly used a false passport to get around.

This detail emerged in court today as Nikola Vujkovic, a 33-year-old Serbian national who lives in Marsaskala, was hit with several charges after his arrest last weekend, which was captured on camera and went viral.

During the sitting, police inspector Darryl Farr presented information from Interpol’s* system showing that Vujkovic is wanted in Serbia in connection with alleged involvement in the possession or manufacturing of illegal explosives and firearms.

He then allegedly fled Serbia using a false passport showing Croatian nationality.

Vujkovic has been charged with grievously injuring a Maltese man during a fight at a Marsaskala establishment on 17th February as well as with breaching the public peace.

He has also been charged with using a fake passport and giving false details to a public officer at Mile End, Ħamrun on 5th March, as well as with violently resisting arrest, assaulting, threatening and slightly injuring police officers on 5th June.

Lawyers Matthew Xuereb and Michael Sciriha, who are appearing parte civile for the Maltese man Vujkovic assaulted last February, requested a protection order in favour of their client and his family, which was granted by Magistrate Josette Demicoli.

Vujkovic is pleading not guilty and has been maintained in custody.
