Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi had denied cheating on his wife after she posted a comment on Facebook calling him a “cheater”.

“What she said is not true. There was no cheating whatsoever,” the MP told Lovin Malta when contacted.

The couple is separating after 18 years of marriage.

His wife took to Facebook to thank her friends for telling her “the truth about my cheating husband”.

“Thanks for telling me that you saw my husband at the airport… Last Saturday my husband for 18 years left our matrimonial home. Last words he told me that next Monday is going to London to see his dying uncle. But in fact he went for a holiday with his lover. Thank you for witnessing the truth dear friends,” she wrote.

When contacted, Dr Azzopardi said his privacy should be respected and at first questioned whether Lovin Malta was planning to contact all the MPs about their private life.

“Are you so interested in private matters? Are you going to ask all the MPs? Are you going to ask Joseph Muscat? Does the personal life of an MP interests you so much?”

He later explained that the couple was “unfortunately” going through a separation which started “ages ago”.

“What she wrote is not true. I do not have comments to make because they are personal matters. I am not going to fall into explaining or justifying these personal matters. Even though the situation is what it is, I will respect and expect others to respect our privacy,” he said.

“What I can say is that it is not true. There was no cheating whatsoever. We’ve been going through this separation for months. I’m not living at home. So there was no cheating whatsoever.”

Dr Azzopardi’s wife told Lovin Malta he only left the matrimonial home on Saturday.

The Nationalist MP is known for his conservative views and was staunchly against divorce.
