New Maltese YouTube Portal Means You Can Now Get Paid For Uploading Videos
YouTube will launch a Maltese portal this year in a move that will finally allow locals to get paid for uploading videos, Lovin Malta is informed.
YouTube’s partner programme allows people to get paid according to how many views their videos get in return for enabling adverts to run on their channels.
Although around 90 countries fall within this programme, Malta is not included – making it and Cyprus the only EU countries not on the list.
However, the discrepancy will finally be fixed later on this year – following lobbying efforts by ethical hacker Fabian Borg, who had started a Change.Org petition to Google nine months ago.
Parliamentary secretary Silvio Schembri launching Google’s Digital News Innovation Fund earlier this year
Parliamentary secretary for the digital economy Silvio Schembri had also held talks with Google after the internet giant launched a Digital News Innovation Fund for Maltese media houses earlier this year.
“It is with great satisfaction to welcome such a decision by YouTube,” Schembri said. “I thank Google for listening attentively to our concerns and demands and I now look forward to see Maltese talent being rewarded.”
PN MEP Francis Zammit Dimech
Nationalist MEP Francis Zammit, who was lobbying Google to include Malta in its YouTube Partner Program, hailed today’s move as one that will boost the exposure and revenue or local artists.
“Today’s launch of the specific YouTube webpage for Malta is an important step for Maltese YouTubers, content creators and users,” he said. “This is because not only will it make local content online more easily accessible for users but it will be further promoting content of local creators including several artists. It is also another step closer for Maltese YouTubers to be compensated financially for content generated online.”
