SMS Triggered Bomb Which Killed Daphne Caruana Galizia

It was a text message, and not a phone call, which triggered a bomb that was placed inside the car of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, Lovin Malta has confirmed with sources close to the investigation.

Through cell phone triangulation, the police – with the aid of the FBI – found out that one of the three murder suspects was stationed in Bidnija on the afternoon of 16th October. As soon as he spotted Caruana Galizia, he called up one of his other two accomplices, who then sent a SMS to a phone which had been attached to a bomb inside the journalist’s car.

According to the sources, Alfred Degiorgio (Il-Fulu) was spotted in Bidnija, George Degiorgio (Ic-Ciniz) detonated the bomb, and Vince Muscat (Il-Kohhu) was assisting.

What else we know so far:

  • The explosive used to manufacture the bomb was TNT and not the military grade explosive Semtex as had previously been reported. Police are not excluding the possibility that the bomb was manufactured in Malta.

  • The suspects communicated through brand new mobile phones which, according to reports, were later retrieved from the sea by Marsa. It is as yet unknown whether the police managed to track the suspects’ locations through their new phones or whether they had slipped up by keeping their personal phones on them.

What we don’t know:

The police’s evidence appears to be rock solid in terms of how the bomb was triggered, but the motive behind the assassination remains a big mystery. Caruana Galizia never wrote about any of the three suspects, which rules out the possibility they had killed her out of revenge. While Caruana Galizia often wrote about organised crime, this was often in the context of the relations between criminals, politicians and businessmen.

MaltaToday reported the assassination is believed to have been sub-contracted and then sub-contracted again, which if true would give the mastermind two layers to hide behind.

We also do not have any information about how or when the bomb was placed.
