22-Year-Old Maltese Student Who Fought Through Cancer To Become An Engineer Dies
A 22-year-old Maltese man who recently graduated as an engineer despite battling cancer through his course has died.
Miguel Borg stole the hearts of many with his tale of astonishing perseverance.
Diagnosed with cancer in 2017, at the start of his Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Malta, he chose to continue his studies.
He wrote his thesis on ‘A Pneumatic Data Monitoring System for Fault Detection’, and his supervisors Paul Refalo and Emmanuel Francalanza described the young man as a “determined, perseverant, resilient and courageous student”.
“He taught us in ways that we could never teach him”, Refalo said. “It was his ambition to work on a sustainable engineering project for his final year dissertation, as he aspired to contribute towards a better environment and quality of life”.
Earlier this month, Miguel graduated as an engineer, with the University of Malta holding a special ceremony at his home and Rector Alfred Vella personally presenting him with his certificate.
“Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends of Miguel Borg, who has sadly passed away earlier this morning following a terminal medical condition affecting his health,” the University said today.
Lovin Malta sends its heartfelt condolences to Miguel Borg’s family and loved ones during this difficult time
