An adorable young Maltese girl suffering from a rare disease will be recovering in a Polish hospital for a longer time than predicted.

The four-year-old Kate underwent surgery last Saturday so that she may have the opportunity to stand on her own feet.

The disease Kate suffers from is Tatton Brown Rahman Syndrome, causing physical and intellectual disability – she also has a mutation that has never been documented, making her the only one worldwide with the mutation.

Although her recent surgery went really well, a chest x-ray revealed that she has respiratory problems, therefore, needing further treatment and monitoring.

“My oxygen levels went suddenly down and it was very hard to regulate it back to normal. This led to chest x ray which confirmed that I have problems in my respiratory system and is not functioning as it should be. They made me intensive physio and suction to try to help my lungs get better together with medications. right now I am stable helped with my bipap machine and oxygen supply,” her family posted to her Facebook page.

“With the money raised, they will help us pay part of the expenses of the therapies. We pay around more €2,000-€2,500 monthly and around €8,000 each time we are abroad,” Kate’s mother, Charmaine Friggieri, had told Lovin Malta.
