After Murder Suspects Walk Free, ‘Justice For Sion’ Vigil Happening In Valletta This Thursday
A vigil to commemorate the murdered Sion Grech’s life will take place in remembrance of her heartbreaking and tragic death – and her loved ones who are still seeking justice.
The event is organised by MGRM, the Women’s Rights Foundation and Moviment Graffiti, and will take place in front of the Courts of Justice Building on 23rd February. The event was originally planned for 9th February but was postponed due to bad weather.
“Together with her family, we will be commemorating Sion’s life, remembering her tragic death, and seeking justice following 18 long years of waiting for the alleged murderers to walk free,’’ the event organisers said.
Sion Grech’s decomposing body was found in Marsa in April 2005. An autopsy revealed that the 20-year-old had been stabbed to death at least 17 times, and then thrown into a field.
Two men – Ismael Habesh and Faical Mohouachi – were charged with Grech’s murder but were found not guilty in a trial by jury last month. In an interview with Jon Mallia on Il-Podcast ta’ Jon, Grech’s sister Rita Borg said the jury’s verdict didn’t surprise her seeing as the prosecution made several errors that resulted in the loss of evidence.
The Malta Observatory on Femicide has recently regarded Sion’s murder as a femicide.
“We cannot but show our full support to Sion’s family and the LGBTIQ community and women in Malta and note that justice delayed, has been justice denied,” the Observatory expressed in a statement.
The ‘Vigil for Justice’ organisers will ask the following questions during the vigil:
- Why did it take 18 years for the case to start?
- Why was the word ‘prostitute’ so important for this case?
- Why was the key evidence lost?
- Why were there mistakes in the charges?
