‘An Adversary In Politics’: Tributes Pour In For Former PN Minister And Architect Michael Falzon
Tributes have begun pouring in for former Nationalist minister and prominent architect Michael Falzon who passed away at aged 79.
The news of his death was shared this morning by Prime Minister Robert Abela who honoured him as a man whose respect never waved, despite sometimes having different opinions.
Falzon held three-decade career in politics where he served as a Member of Parliament across four legislatures. While Malta was governed by a Nationalist administration, Falzon served as Infrastructure Minister (from 1987), Environment Minister (from 1992) and Education and Human Resources Minister (from 1994).
He took a step down from frontline politics in 1996 but returned to the political stage to contest the 2004 European elections alongside now-President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.
Metsola also paid tribute to Falzon’s legacy, remembering the moments she got to know the architect when they were both candidates.
She described him as a “a source of information and experience, having lived through politics during challenging times and having served as a Minister responsible for our country’s new infrastructure.”
“One of Michael’s standout traits was that he didn’t dwell on nostalgia but always looked forward,” she wrote on social media.
PN Leader Bernard Grech also paid tribute to the late politician, outlining his “various important roles.
Leader of new political part Momentum, Arnold Cassola, also took to social media, honouring his prowess as a politician and sharing deep sadness at the news.
“Michael Falzon. An adversary in politics. A severe critic, at times. He has gone too. A part of my political life goes with him. May he rest in peace.”
The Labour Party also extended its condolences in a press statement issued following the news:
“The Labour Party extends sincere condolences to the family of Architect Michael Falzon, a former Minister who served the country. Prime Minister and Labour Leader Robert Abela also paid tribute to the memory of Michael Falzon, whose thoughts always focused on how to bring about good.”
While a largely respected figure in politics, his reputation was tainted when it was discovered in 2015 that he held a secret Swedish bank account in the 1980s holding the equivalent of €460,000. Falzon always maintained the account held money earned from work he did for foreign clients before his time as minister.
