He may have just got married two days ago while battling a life-threatening illness, but Bjorn Formosa still found time to give the best response ever to a couple of haters on Facebook yesterday.

“I believe in freedom of expression and I’m not here to criticize or attack a few lads who tried guessing unsuccessfully my opening dance,” he said. “In light of recent ‘hurtful’ Facebook messages, I welcome them as free publicity to continue promoting our ALS cause!”

“Let’s turn bad publicity into good publicity,” he added. 

He was responding to public outcry over a string of cruel jokes made on his wedding day. The offenders’ comments have been described by the President of Malta’s Police Officers Union, Sandro Camilleri, as “cruel and vile”. He also warned that public offences such as these can be prosecuted and may result in a  fine of up to €23,000.

The comments about the couple’s marriage were made following an announcement earlier this week by Formosa that his condition had worsened. Formosa suffers from ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
