For the past 48 hours, six brave and passionate individuals have been kayaking around the perimeter of the island of Malta in an attempt to raise awareness for plastic pollution. Over the two days, the six individuals, headed by local activist Cami Appelgren, travelled around the island, collecting any waste and plastic pollution they came across.

Starting at Birżebbugia at 6am on Saturday the 22nd, the six headed off on a 90km trip, arriving back at Birżebbugia at 6pn on Sunday 23rd
While on their trip, they made several pitstops and various local bays and beaches to refuel and catch up with supporters who made it down to visit them. Several people brought them food and cheered them on as they pushed through the journey.

Cami kept followers updated with live posts going out on Facebook every time they reached a landmark
And the support the team was receiving surely helped to keep them pushing through. The team arrived in Birżebbugia quite a while after their estimated time of arrival as supporters waited anxiously for them, at around 6:45pm.

But as exciting as it was to follow these six individuals, their trip also served as a harsh wake-up call
As they arrived back in Birżebbugia having collected an insane amount of waste and plastic from the sea. And the truth is this is probably only a fraction of what is really out there.

So let this journey serve as reminder to employ your there R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. If we want to look at a pollution free world, it has to start from our homes. And the next time you go to the beach, pick up some trash instead of leaving your own there.
