Eli Mallia, the 12-year-old boy who was injured in a brutal car crash by the Mġarr-Mosta roundabout that claimed the lives of his mother and grandmother, has been released from hospital.

Meanwhile, the child’s great-grandmother Lucy, who was also involved in the crash, underwent a successful operation but has remained in hospital for now.

Eli’s mother Fallon Mallia, aged 31, and her grandmother Graziella, aged 53, tragically died last weekend when their Maruti 800 collided with an Audi A1 by the roundabout, where roadworks are taking place.

According to The Times, investigators believe that the Maruti, which is meant to fit four people, had six people packed inside and was driving at an excessive speed before entering into the opposite lane where the collision is believed to have occurred.

Besides Graziella, Fallon, Eli and Lucy, the Maruti was also carrying a 44-year-old and a 29-year-old.

Eli’s aunt will now take custody over the child.
