Jerome Frendo inspired the country last year when, while battling bone cancer kept positive and never let his battle slow him down or remove the smile from his face.

His story spread throughout the island, and his altruism and smile were so synonymous that as soon as the 20-year-old passed away, the Smiling With Jerome Initiative was set up in his name to aid those most vulnerable in society.

His namesake and legacy live on through his foundation, but now, his smile will be visible wherever his father goes now that Kenneth Frendo has gone a step further and got a permanent tattoo of his son right near his heart.

Kenneth Tattoo

Speaking to Xarabank, Kenneth said that “just because I got this tattoo doesn’t mean my son is coming back. But one of the things he told me before he died was to always remember him with the smile we knew him for. So I did this tattoo as part of my commitment to keep Jerome with me always, on me, like he was always on me when he was sick.”

The tattoo was done by Thomaz Cauchi. Jerome’s father said that he wasn’t the kind of guy that is into tattoos, that he had never had a tattoo done before and he said that this was his very first tattoo.

He also said that he was not going to get another tattoo. “I didn’t really get a tattoo exactly – I got a portrait done,” he said. “And what I want is that when I die I am buried with a picture of my son on my chest. I wanted him to be with me permanently.”
