‘He Threw Stones At My Daughter’: Pelin Kaya’s Mother Sobs In Court After Hearing What Murder Suspect Did

There were emotional scenes in the courtroom corridors on Thursday as Pelin Kaya’s mother sobbed for her daughter right after the latest sitting.

Çiçek Kaya’s loud cries as her distraught relatives tried to console her raw pain gave a real sense, if any was needed, of the extent of the damage left by Jeremie Camilleri on 18th January.

Kaya cried out in Turkish and her words were translated to English by an interpreter who was present in court and who stayed with the family after the sitting.

“When I heard about the stones, those stones were thrown at my heart. He threw stones at my daughter.”

“My daughter had a bruise on her forehead and my finger was hollow enough to go in. He threw stones at my daughter.”

“After my daughter died, he threw stones at her. Six stones.”

My child is gone, don’t let other mothers get hurt. I’m waiting for support. I haven’t eaten for 22 days, I haven’t been drinking, I haven’t slept.”

“My daughter has been absent for 22 days. I go to Turkey but my daughter isn’t there, I come to Malta but my daughter isn’t here. I don’t have my daughter anymore.”

“My daughter came because Malta is safe and beautiful. My child didn’t harm anyone.

“It was her birthday and she was happy when her friends brought cake. She didn’t know, she didn’t say that ‘I only have one hour left’.”

In a statement issued to mark three weeks since Pelin’s death, the victim’s family thanked the Maltese police and government, the Turkish embassy and their lawyers for helping them return her body to Turkey for a burial, and the general public for the support they have shown.

“We know our prayers will be answered and Pelin’s soul will eventually find the peace she so desperately seeks. From this day onwards, we can only aim foe justice and we count on the continuous support of the people of Malta not not put this case to rest until justice is served,” they said.

“There is no greater pain than a mother losing her child. Our world has changed forever in the most inexpressible way possible, we have to make sure no mother ever has to endure such a deep pain. We know for a fact that this was not simply an accident; it was coldblooded murder.”

Quoting the Quran, the family said that “whoever takes an innocent life commits a crime against all humanity”.

“We know every single one of you can feel this pain in your hearts as much as we do. Pelin’s pain is not just ours, it is everyone’s,” they concluded.

CCTV footage shows that Camilleri left his home and drove to Gżira shortly after midnight on 18th January, around an hour after he sent his ex-girlfriend an ominous voice recording, describing himself as a psychopath and a proud criminal and saying she will read about him on the news the next day.

When he came across Kaya, who had just turned 30 and was waiting to meet her boyfriend who had just landed in Malta, Camilleri changed his car’s direction and ran her over before crashing into the nearby KFC restaurant.

Camilleri then threw rocks at Kaya’s body and attacked other witnesses, including people who tried to help the victim.

In court on Wednesday, it emerged that Camilleri used to live in extremely squalid conditions. Police found dead rats on his kitchen floor, live rats scuttling around, his toilet clogged with excrement, water on the floor and filth everywhere.
