Here’s How An Aspiring Maltese Politician Lost 42 Kilos In 12 Months

A year ago, PN general election candidate Angelo Micallef decided to make a drastic change in diet and lifestyle. Just over 12 months later, Micallef went from 132 kilos to 90… losing an incredible 42 kilos.

“I had been lucky enough to have never suffered from any health consequences despite years of gross obesity, but I started feeling as if I was pressing my luck,” Angelo told Lovin Malta. “I decided it was high time to start taking care of myself. I decided to take action before my luck ran out. Thats when I went to Dr. Mario Caruana.”

The plan Dr. Caruana presented was, in Angelo’s words, “not a diet. A diet is a phase, something you for six months to lost x amount of kilos. This is a lifestyle change.”

As expected, such a drastic change doesn’t come easy. “I spent a long time telling myself I’m never going to achieve what I wanted,” Angelo told Xarabank. “But I focused on the task at hand and I managed. Sometimes, you just need to remove all traces of pessimism and tell yourself you’re going to manage.”

“It’s all about planning out your meals so as not to eat a lot in one sitting, but to spread it out,” Angelo explained. “I used to spend all day at the office not eating  a single thing, then eat my entire daily intake all in the evening. That’s a big no no.”

“I used to indulge in sweets and fatty foods on a daily basis, and that’s obviously not the way to do it. But there’s nothing wrong with the occasional slice of cake. It’s not about rendering your life dull and boring; its about finding the right balance. And thats what Dr. Caruana did for me; he helped me find that balance.”

Of course, it’s not just about limiting – or changing – your daily food intake.

“Exercise also helped,” Angelo told Lovin Malta. “I started to exercise, twice a week for now. It’s the first time in my life I’ve ever exercised, and it wasn’t easy at first. Now, it’s quickly becoming routine, and I’m hoping to gradually increase that amount. When I have to miss my sessions because of a super crazy week, I actually miss the exercise routine.”

“If I had to summarise how I managed to get here in just over a year, I’d say it’s a cocktail of professional guidance, will power and determination,” Angelo finished off. “And of course, all the support that I received from loved ones. Again, it’s all about looking at it not as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle.”

So what’s next for Angelo Micallef?

“There is no ‘end goal’ when it comes to my weight,” he told Lovin Malta. “It’s just a matter of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If I lose more weight, that would be very welcome, if I don’t, it’s not tragic. The aim is to obviously reach a healthy weight, which is less than what I currently weigh. But it’s not a fixation.”

Kudos Angelo for one of the most successful resolutions of this last year!
