Renowned Maltese podcaster Jon Mallia opened up about his struggles with depression and contemplating suicide, and this will be shown on tonight’s episode of The SHE Word.

The season Finale of The SHE Word “Women and a Man’s Point of View” will be coming out tonight at 7pm where guests Melissa Speigner, Mallia and Peter Grech share their thoughts on three topics discussed in the fourth season: the male gaze, dating and depression.

Mallia talks about how he had to take a step back, re-evaluate his life, friends, goals and the destination he saw for himself in the future.

He also touched upon his struggle with opening up in therapy, which he linked to societal expectations of men but ultimately boiled it down to “the way we are”.

The popular podcaster also speaks about the statistics and discrepancy in numbers between depression rates and suicide rates in men.

Presenter Trudy Kerr soon jumped in and explained what she thinks is the reason for women’s ability to open up more.

“It’s already something within our nature,” she said.

She explained that women have a “more acceptable relationship” with feelings of depression because, as women, “we have ‘one gift’ every month.

”She then goes on to speak about the struggles that come along with menopause which can also result in feelings of depression, relating back to a previous episode with Olympian Dierdre Farrugia and her struggles with serious depression while she was perimenopausal.

Kerr, asks Peter Grech how he would approach talking to another man, specifically a friend who might be struggling and Grech responds by saying “we need to open up and have that conversation and talk about the hard things, and make it be clear that it’s very okay.”

Grech also talks about the nuclear family where the man is the breadwinner, and how “there is no time and space to stop and get depressed” and opens up about his struggles with depression related to issues brought on by COVID-19.
