By now, everyone has seen the viral moment from the controversial New Year’s Eve Paris countdown. However, one Maltese man shared his experience of the day and offered some insightful reflections on the celebrations.

Jonathan Brimmer travelled to Paris from 28th December to 4th January and like everyone else in Paris went to Champs Elysees to welcome in the New Year.

“I was there. The show and the atmosphere throughout the whole evening up to the countdown was very vibrant with people celebrating, cheering and dancing,” Jonathan told Lovin Malta.

“However, immediately at midnight the crowd fell quiet with everyone watching the fireworks. I found it strange as in Malta and everywhere else outside the island that I’ve been to on NYE people celebrate at midnight,” Brimmer remarked.

“I don’t think that the reason was the use of mobile phones because even those people who weren’t using their phone were watching the fireworks quietly at the stroke of midnight,” Jonathan added.

Jonathan also reflected on the difference between celebrations in Malta and in Paris and how “the crowd remained polite throughout the whole evening – there were no drunk people, no-one over-shouting, none behaving badly.”

“I think that it’s more the case of people being very polite and well-educated. This is something which I was positively impressed about in my first visit to Paris,” Jonathan summed up his experience
