‘I’m Asking For A Chance’: Ingrid Sammut Appeals For Help To Save Her Leg

Ingrid Sammut is asking people for help in securing a specialised machine to save her leg following intensive cancer surgery.

The former reality TV show star last February underwent surgery for Ewing’s sarcoma, which required the removal of a 12.3cm section of her sciatic nerve.

She warned that following the surgery, one of her legs has been left immobile and in constant pain.

“Today, I live with a leg that doesn’t move, doesn’t feel, doesn’t function,” Ingrid said.

“A complete foot drop. And worse, I live with excruciating relentless pain that feels like I’m being electrocuted from the inside out, day and night.”

“Burning. Zapping. Shooting bolts down a limb that doesn’t even respond to my touch. The irony is unbearable – to feel so much pain in a leg that otherwise feels dead.”

“I can barely make my way to the bathroom without assistance or attend to my 6-year old daughter’s basic needs.”

“The muscles that once carried me through dance, training, work, and motherhood are wasting away at a very fast rate.”

And with her leg facing an extended lack of stimulation, Ingrid warned there exists a real risk of permanent loss of function.

After seeking medical advice, she said she is urgently looking for local access to specialised TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) or neuromuscular electrical stimulation for denervated muscles.

“This could help stimulate muscle fibres and buy me time while I work on nerve regrowth which is a very long process, if at all possible,” she said.

“It could be my only chance to preserve the connection between my body and my will while my nerve attempts to regenerate, before muscle atrophy becomes completely irreversible and it’s too late.”

“I’m not asking for a miracle. I’m asking for a machine. For a physiotherapy referral. For a lead. For a chance.”
