‘It’s Like A Drug For Women’: Maltese Couple Believes Their Eco-Friendly Scheme Is The Future Of Cleaning

A Maltese couple is shaking up the way we shop for detergents by offering their customers to buy in bulk, using recycled packaging and ensuring very affordable deals.

Run by husband and wife team Robert and Odette Vassallo, Clean 4U sells things like floor cleaners and laundry detergents by the litre.

The Vassallos import the liquids in bulk from Italy and sell them to their customers in old plastic bottles. They then ask their customers to return with the same bottles every time they need a refill, eliminating the need to dispose of the packaging outright. Of course, customers can also opt to bring their own bottles.

The Vassallos believe their products offer extreme value for money.

Indeed, while a 650ml bottle of something like sgrassatura will cost you around €1.75, these guys are practically giving away their own degreaser at €5 for five litres.

Robert likens their product model to “a drug for women” – and claims that “this is the future of cleaning”.

“We eat a lot, we have to clean a lot too,” he told Lovin Malta.

People are hauling their asses over to their store in Paola all the way from Mellieħa, which the couple find confusing because they offer the same services at the Mellieħa Cash & Carry.

“We even import international brands, everything is hypoallergenic, organic and biodegradable. Our sgrassatore can be dropped in the sea and have no harmful effects on the marine life,” Robert said.

Besides detergents, the Vassallos also sell heavy duty cleaning equipment, such as industrial buckets, that are sure to make anyone’s chores a whole lot easier.

“People are realising that it’s better to buy something professional, it saves them physically and financially – there’s no bending over to squeeze the mop, just kick a pedal.”

All products are certified for sale within Europe, to the highest of sanitary standards – even the degreaser is food-grade. And of course, the entire system helps promote a culture of recycling.

“We have to find a way to save the world, or at least try,” they said.

Robert and Odette even have a little competition running at the moment; they are self-confessed lovers of the sea and want to impart their initiative to the younger generations.

“We would like to ask children to send us in their drawings of them saving the world from plastic. The the winner will have the honour of having their picture printed in our store and the original will be auctioned towards an animal charity.”
