Aleksandar Dimitrijevic, founder of Men Against Violence and husband of prominent lawyer, activist and brain behind Women’s Rights Foundation (WRF), Lara Dimitrijevic, recounted the intense yet validating moment he and his wife remembered that the fight for equity is “all worth it”.

“Sunday, 11th of March 2018, we woke up to a beautiful sunny day. We were sitting at home, reading through the newspapers, with my better half’s face splashed on the cover pages,” he began.

The day before, WRF held a press conference on their position paper on sexual and reproductive health and rights that included recommendations on the decriminalisation and legalisation of abortion.

This was followed by the “media frenzy, online vilification and abuse” along with a “death threat that Lara reported to the police.”

“It was a tense time in our lives. We couldn’t help but think do we really need all this s***?”

However, at around 11am, she suggested that they go have a glass of wine in the sun and just enjoy the day.

“Drove to Għajn Tuffieħa bay, our youngest stayed playing in the sand, whilst we went looking for a table at the terrace of the restaurant.”

“While walking past a table of a young family, the man extended his hand and grabbed Lara’s.”

“I froze. She froze.”

But in a twist of events, the man looked up at Lara and just said “thank you”.

“He had let go of Lara’s hand already and pointed at his daughters, two gorgeous girls, maybe four and six years old. ‘Thank you for what you are doing for them,’” Alexander recounted.

The moment was tense – it left the pair relieved and taken aback, forcing them to take some time to wrap their heads around what had just happened.

“We sat for a while in silence, sipping our drinks, trying to enjoy the sun. ‘It’s worth it,’ she said. ‘It’s all worth it’.”

Lara has been at the forefront of the pro-choice and anti-femicide movements – her voice has spoken for many people who felt like they couldn’t and this has made a significant impact on Malta.

She is currently representing Andrea Prudente in her a court case against Maltese authorities arguing that the islands’ abortion laws breach human rights.
