JeanPaul Sofia’s cousin has opened up about the soul-crushing moment when she received the call about her 20-year-old cousin’s death.

Nicole Gauci, who is currently living in America, told Lovin Malta how horrible it was to receive the news of his tragic and sudden death over the phone.

“It was horrible, I had arrived home from work and went out for some errands, and that night I decided to leave my phone at home, which is something I never do,” she said.

“When I got home again, I found missed calls from my mum, and I immediately thought that something must have happened to my grandmother. But then my mum told me it was about JeanPaul.”

“I was shaking – I didn’t even know what to do when I received the news,” she said.

“All of us are in a horrible state at the moment. Everyone is crushed. How do you tell your grandma that this happened to her grandson?”

Remembering him at his best, Gauci recounted how she and JeanPaul grew up together hanging out at their grandmother’s house.

“He was always joking around, in his whole life I’ve never seen him upset or anything. He was always smiling, you wouldn’t even hear him saying negative things.”

“It’s very upsetting when you remember that he had his whole life ahead of him, it was very sudden.”

“We are very upset, and we feel like Malta is a disaster right now. There are a lot of tragedies happening, and no one cares until it’s their family that gets hit.”

She appealed to Maltese people to pay more attention to what’s been happening, warning that one day they could be next to have to deal with such a tragedy.

“Today it’s us, tomorrow it could be you.”

She pledged to not stop fighting for JeanPaul, stressing that he did not deserve to lose his life the way he did.

“People are leaving Malta, I was one of them. If all these tragedies continue happening and the government doesn’t do anything, more people are going to end up leaving.”

JeanPaul tragically lost his life after a building collapsed at a construction site in Kordin over the weekend, leaving six workers buried under the rubble.

JeanPaul’s funeral will be held tomorrow at 9am in Swatar, with family members telling attendees to not wear black.

Rest in Peace JeanPaul
