Prime Minister Joseph Muscat cracked a joke on Instagram as his wife Michelle completed her annual charity swim – a gruelling 12km journey from Qawra Point to Għadira Bay.

“She’s #cominghome,” Muscat said, in a reference to the popular chant of England football supporters.

The Prime Minister’s wife dived in the sea at Qawra Point at 11am and reached her destination at Għadira Bay at around 4:30pm, an hour and a half later than she was scheduled to arrive. The swim, with proceeds going to Malta’s Special Olympics team, has become an annual summer event – with Michelle Muscat increasing the difficulty every year.

Joseph Muscat posted a family photo of Instagram earlier, wishing his wife the best of luck.

Michelle Muscat, who also chairs the BOV-run Marigold Foundation, had admitted she was nervous that she wouldn’t be able to complete this challenge, noting that the seas were particularly rough yesterday.

“Joseph isn’t very happy with me, he tells me: ‘I don’t know where you got the idea from.’ Even the kids, they can’t wait for it to end,'” Michelle laughed in an interview with Xarabank. “I’m always worried that I won’t make it: it’s not always the same, every time you do it it’s different – there’s different currents or jellyfish…”
